DRAWING

Painted works based on evolving concepts, 2007 (right) to now (left).

Melissa Furness is an artist that utilizes “drawing” as a method of play, which takes place on something more than just paper. Drawing is an exploration of action—as a verb. Each drawing series demonstrates experimental methods of process, immediacy and a kind of performance. In these works, there are layers of transparencies, one process upon another; there are little “stacks” or mini “piles” of objects or images; and the drawings take on a life of its own out in the world. These works both depict and respond to varying environments, as drawing has the ability to manifest a swift motion as well as a long and steadied observation. With drawing, the artist tests out and utilizes the history of the work itself. There is beauty in the erosion, the layers, the stacking, the visible and the invisible.
